After almost twelve years of post-secondary education, the end is in sight. Grad-school-time is more compressed than real time, and so “the end” isn’t actually for six to eight more months, but that’s close enough to raise my pulse considerably when I think about it. Between now and then, I’ll finish a significant amount of research, write and submit several manuscripts, apply for postdoctoral research positions, drink a lot of tea, write a lot of code, and sleep less than is probably advisable.
But! I’m not alone. There are hundreds of us all over the world, staring at screens until we dream about R code or PCR results, and getting tendonitis in our wrists from typing or operating an auto-pipetter. And we will laugh hysterically at comics that only a subset of people would find funny. Let’s laugh, cry, write, compile, analyze, and triumph together! I’ll be tweeting using the hashtag #PhD2012 in the coming year, and I hope you’ll join me (or, start your own #PhD2013, etc.). If nothing else, we can have fun procrastinating networking together.
P.S. Did you know I’m a finalist for the 2011 Blogging Scholarship? Check out the blogs and vote here (and, you can vote once every 24 hours).

You are right, there are many of us round the world! From one British theoretical ecology PhD student due to finish in February, I wish you good luck and not too many sleepless nights while finishing your thesis 🙂
